Every dog has a story
Walter
Walter is a sweet senior dog who arrived seriously underweight after struggling to eat in a shelter's care. His first vet visit turned up a severe mouth infection and a possible kidney concern still being worked up, and he's now getting fluids, antibiotics, and close monitoring from his foster and his vet. Through all of it, he has stayed remarkably gentle and affectionate. He has now been adopted and will head to his forever home in early November.

Their Journey So Far
Welcome to the Pack, Walter
September 9, 2026A shelter reached out about a fragile senior dog who was weak and struggling to eat. At first, we had to say no — we simply had nowhere for him to go. Then a volunteer stepped forward and offered to foster him, and our no became a yes. Today, we picked him up. He's weak and clearly needs veterinary care, with his first appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning, and we expect he'll need a full dental and possibly more once he's fully examined. Despite everything he's been through, he is remarkably gentle, trusting, and affectionate. Somewhere between the shelter and his new beginning, he stopped being Coco and became Walter, because he has the distinguished look of a handsome older gentleman. He has a wonderful temporary foster for now, but once his initial medical care is behind him, he'll need a longer-term foster while he waits for his forever home. Welcome to the Pack, Walter — this is where your comeback begins.
A Tougher Road Than We Hoped
September 10, 2026Walter's first vet visit turned up more than we had hoped for. He's dealing with a severe mouth infection, likely a major reason eating has been so hard for him, so the vet gave him fluids and started him on an antibiotic to fight it off. Bloodwork also flagged a possible kidney issue his medical team still needs to sort out, so for now we're holding off on any conclusions until his full results are in. Underneath his fluffy coat, Walter is also seriously underweight. Through every bit of it, he has stayed nothing but sweet and gentle, and we're determined to help him feel good again. We're grateful to the shelter staff and volunteers who saw a dog who needed extra help and trusted us to give it to him. For now, Walter is safe, comfortable, loved, and getting exactly the care he needs — we'll keep everyone posted.

Better News Than We Expected
September 12, 2026This is the Walter update we needed heading into the weekend. After his fluids, antibiotic, and lab work, his results came back better than we'd expected. And once that treatment got into his system, Walter started eating — real, enthusiastic, tail-wagging eating. His foster mom has been making him home-cooked meals to help, and honestly, we don't care how spoiled that sounds, because he's eating and starting to regain some strength. A huge thank you to Shawntee and Chuck, his temporary foster angels who spent these critical first few days getting him stable, comfortable, fed, and loved. And another thank you to Tricia, who takes over as his foster tomorrow and will be by his side through his upcoming dental treatment for that badly infected mouth. Walter still has a road ahead, but this little guy is already showing us he's ready for his comeback.

Spoiled Rotten
September 15, 2026Walter update: still recovering. Unfortunately, he has also developed a severe case of being absolutely spoiled rotten.

Surgery Done, and He Did Great
September 17, 2026Walter's surgery is done, and he came through it beautifully. His vet found 13 teeth badly compromised by long-untreated infection and had to remove all of them, leaving him with just one tooth, plus a nasal fistula (an abnormal opening between his mouth and nose) that needed repairing at the same time. The infection had eaten away a significant amount of bone in his lower jaw, so for now Walter needs to take it easy and protect that fragile area while he heals. None of this happened overnight — years of untreated dental disease got him here, but shelter staff and volunteers caught it in time to get him the help he needed. Huge thanks to Nicky for handling his transport today and to his foster mom Tricia, who's spoiling him rotten on the road to recovery. It took a whole village to get Walter this far. Now it's time for him to heal.
A Little Mini Groom
September 22, 2026Walter is feeling so much better these days — he even got himself a little mini groom. His foster reports he's incredibly loving and snuggly, and it's clear he's on the mend after his big oral surgery. He's still healing with some recovery ahead, but he's comfortable, loved, and in the best hands. After everything he's been through, watching him finally get to rest, heal, and be spoiled is pretty wonderful.

Three Weeks Later
September 29, 2026Three weeks. That's all it took to start seeing this precious senior come back to life. Walter came to us in rough shape with significant health problems and desperately needed medical care, but before we could help him, he needed somewhere safe to recover. Then Tricia said yes. Because she opened her home, we were able to get Walter the care he desperately needed, and we're incredibly fortunate to have a veterinary partner who has been extraordinarily generous with our rescue in helping cover his surgeries and treatment. Tricia has been an absolute angel — Walter doesn't spend even a second wondering whether he's loved. He's spoiled, doted on, comfortable, safe, and cared for exactly the way a senior dog deserves to be. And just look at the difference three weeks can make. Walter is well on his way to recovery. He's not quite ready for adoption yet, but we'll keep you posted as he continues getting stronger.
Walter Is Officially Off the Market!
October 12, 2026This is one of those adoption announcements that makes every difficult day in rescue worth it. When Walter came to The Comeback Pack, he was in pretty rough shape. This sweet senior needed medical care, comfort, and most of all, someone to show him that his life still mattered. Thanks to the kind person who rescued him from the shelter and became his first foster, to Tricia, his incredible long-term foster, and to our wonderful veterinary partners, Walter got exactly what he needed. And what a transformation! Walter is happy, playful, feeling good, comfortable, and absolutely showered with love. But then something even more amazing happened. Enter Annette. Annette is a good friend of Tricia's, and from the moment she saw Walter's photo, she fell in love. She's been following his journey since day one, checking in regularly, helping with the cost of his special food, and cheering him on every step of the way. Somewhere along the way, she decided that following Walter's journey wasn't enough. She wanted to be part of the rest of his story. Today, we made it official: Annette has adopted Walter! She has an upcoming trip, so Walter will keep enjoying Tricia's hospitality until Annette picks him up in early November. But the paperwork is signed, the adoption is official, and Walter is officially no longer a single man! To Tricia, Annette, and everyone who helped: thank you for seeing the value in a little senior dog the world had seemingly forgotten, and for your compassion, your generosity, and your willingness to love a dog who needed a little extra help. People like you are why we do this. Walter may be in his golden years, but something tells us the best chapter of his life is just beginning.
